Do Arches Suit Your Home?
Over the past few years, arches have surged in popularity as a home design element, constantly popping up on my social media feed and design conversations. Just a few weeks ago, I was asked to add an arched doorway into a space I’m designing. While initially I took up my client's enthusiasm for the idea, the more I thought about it, the more I wondered if it truly suited the design of her home. This led me to do some research into arches and when it is appropriate to use them and when it isn't. So, I thought I'd share some of my findings and give you a glimpse into my thought process that led to my final recommendation for my client!
First, Let’s Take it Way Back
While arches may be perceived as trendy at times, they are far more than just a passing fad.
Architectural arches have been both a functional and timeless design feature, with roots dating back thousands of years. They served as an essential structural element for civilizations like the Mesopotamians and Egyptians while as time progressed into the Greek era and through the Middle Ages, arches evolved into a prominent design element, particularly in European architecture, gracing structures like castles and cathedrals.During the Renaissance, architects reintroduced classical Roman designs, including the semicircular arch. Side note, witnessing these arches in person while touring numerous cathedrals in Italy was amazing!

This cathedral is a must see if you are ever in Florence, Italy.
Types of Architectural Styles that Feature Arches
Mediterranean and Spanish Colonial
Arches are a common feature in Spanish and Mediterranean interior and exterior design, especially in entryways and courtyards. I often see this style in desert climates and love it for the warmth and romance it adds to the architecture.
Victorian and Edwardian
Victorian and Edwardian architecture often featured ornate detailing with arches, particularly in doorways, windows, and porches. It is rare to see such beautiful detail in modern day homes but when you do and if it’s done well, it brings a sense of authenticity and intrigue to those spaces.
Modern and Contemporary
Arches are seeing a resurgence in modern architecture but with a twist: clean lines and various materials are used to achieve a sleek and minimalist appearance. They can create visual interest and enhance the flow of natural light.
When to include Arches in your Home
Enhancing your architecture
If you have a home that features Mediterranean, Spanish Colonial, or other historically inspired architecture, it is more than appropriate to include arches. If you have a modern home and love arches, there are beautiful ways to incorporate arches that will set your home apart.
Arches in Entryway
Add an arched door to your entryway to enhance your architecture
Repeating a theme
If you are doing arches, I suggest integrating them in multiple areas throughout your home, but in moderation. An archway, that is not repeated in other areas, can feel out of place. If you do include arches in the interior of your home, consider repeating the arch on the exterior for a cohesive look. Don’t restrict yourself to only the architecture! You can complement your archways by introducing round edges in your furniture, fireplaces, and even light fixtures.
Adding elegance
Arches naturally exude elegance and sophistication, making them a beautiful addition to areas like entryways, formal dining rooms, or primary suites.
When to not include Arches in your Home
Space constraints
Oversized arches may overpower a space, whereas undersized arches may appear disproportionate.
Clashing architectural styles
Arches don’t belong in every project. If you are building new, you can easily incorporate arches whether your house is modern or traditional keeping in mind that arches should be repeated both on the interior and the exterior of your home to create consistency. However, if you are doing a remodel and your home’s original architecture doesn’t include arches, then I would resist the temptation to add them unless you are doing a complete overhaul of your home.
Overuse
Avoid excessive use of arches, as it can create visual clutter and detract from the overall design.
Arches are a classic design element that adds character, personality and flow to a home. Their enduring popularity over the last several years is a testament to their beauty when executed thoughtfully. As for my client, who unintentionally led me down this intriguing rabbit-hole of arches….This is what I’m thinking:
Her home is very square, meaning there are no arches currently, so I do feel like adding structural arches wouldn’t be consistent with her architecture. However, I feel good about adding them to her mirrors and accessories and then adding rounded corners to her furniture and lighting. We are even thinking about changing out her kitchen hood to a rounded plaster hood that would be perfect and would add some softness to her space. This is going to be such a fun project! I can’t wait!
I hope this helps if you are considering arches in your home. As always, If you need some help, please reach out, I’m here for your designing journey.
With Love,
